The Five Charities
FRIENDS OF ABINGDON CITIZEN’S ADVICE BUREAU
CABs provide impartial,
independent and confidential advice free of charge. In Abingdon we have
around 50 volunteer advisers, supported to help with a wide range of
issues including employment, consumer rights, family problems, tax, debt
counselling and legal matters. Over 7,000 clients from Abingdon and the
surrounding area visit this CAB each year. The Friends especially support
your CAB, which needs funds in addition to the grants received from local
government.

OXFORDSHIRE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
OCF's important role is to
distribute money to very small projects throughout Oxfordshire needing
funds. These can range from schemes to help children, young people, adults
and families, the elderly, or even community groups of all types. The
share of monies raised by ACWT going to OCF will provide grants to other
charities and groups in Abingdon who will be eligible to apply for one-off
or small on-going funding.

ABINGDON YOUNG PEOPLE’S DROP-IN CENTRES (TAB)
Known as The Abingdon Bridge
(TAB), we opened in 1993 offering support and information to the 13–25
age range. We cover advice on housing and benefits, drugs, alcohol, sexual
health and young family issues. Our well-attended computer club offers a
change to catch up on missed schooling or write CVs or find out how to use
the internet. Confidential counselling is particularly in demand. TAB
provides a local service where young people trust the staff to ‘bridge’
them onto other forms of assistance where necessary, helping a growing
number of young people each year.

LOCAL YOUTH MENTORING SCHEME
We work with young people based in the Abingdon area, who have severe
school, family or peer pressure problems.
We target one of the hardest to reach age groups: 10–13 year olds,
who without this support can fall into a gap between early years provision
and support services targeted at teenagers.
We offer youngsters the chance to gain confidence with help and
encouragement of a trained adult volunteer mentor. They meet up every week
for an hour or two, and build up trust over time. They enjoy new
activities together and learn new skills.
The number of hours of volunteer time is considerable, including
training and supervision as well as meeting their young person. It may be
around 150 hours over the year, but is very rewarding to see these young
people progress.
Please contact us via email if you are interested in becoming a volunteer
mentor.
Or can you give an hour’s pay per month to support many volunteer
hours work each month, and help make a massive difference to a local young
person’s life?
